pre delhi happenings

This was my email to Erin and Noemi – I’m picking them up from the airport veeerry late Saturday night.

1) sleep on the plane. your first day is going to be a bunch of running around.
We’re waking up at 9:30 to go to Dharavi – the slum where we teach capoeira to kids.
From there, depending on time, we’ll eat, head back to Priya’s place to shower fast, and then hop on the train

2) we have a long time on the train, we can chat, catch up on sleep, look out the window, plan delhi

3) delhi, we’ll check into our awesome hotel, and start our afternoon walking around, i say we should stay local to south delhi, we can do old delhi maybe tuesday, agra wednesday, and then roam more around on thursday before. our plane is at 8 so we’ll have to leave our hotel in the early evening.

4) Pune!!!! we get back pretty late. i’ll see if my friend wants to pick us up from the airport.if not we’ll venture to MY HOUSE by cab.

5) Friday morning you guys can sleep in, I just got some eggs, pasta, yogurt in case you want to make any basic, basic, food. I can’t get milk or it will go bad.I’ll go to work. I’ll leave you with directions on how to get to my office and we’ll go to one of my centers together and you can see what I do. Then we’ll come back home, we can get some food, chill out, hang with one or two of my friends.

6) Saturday we’ll catch a train or bus to Mumbai. I won’t kill you guys with train rides and the bus depot for Mumbai is right here in my hood. We can decide in the morning.

7) Mumbai – we have Saturday for chillaxing, dropping our stuff at Priyanka’s house (where we’re staying the rest of the time) seeing a bit here and there, and then capoeira class. Erin can’t play, but can berimbau, atabaque and pandiero and love the class just the same :). Then we’ll all go out with capoeira folks for food. Sunday we can go to Dharavi again (I go every Sunday) or just hang. I leave Sunday night on the 8:30 train and bid you farewell – it’s the last train I can take without dying at work the next day (it gets me in at midnight, the next train gets me in at 3am).

8) Priyanka works so what you can do is probably sleep in a bit, pack up your stuff and go to one or two tourist spots. I can see who doesn’t work, Maybe Nupur can pick you up or you can meet him somewhere and take you a bit more sightseeing – he’s one of my really good friends who works as a personal trainer so his schedule is a bit more flexible. if not, me and Priyanka can map out something for you.

9) you leave back to NYC 😦

In other news, I got my bike today. A Hero Honda CD Delux – black and red. See below for the picture. The whole process was a long one, but finally d-day has come. Yesterday, Sameer helped me get my affidavit. We met one guy who gave us the paper and then I had to take it to some office to get it stamped. Three counters and one attempted bribe later, I was set. At the last counter the clerk blatantly told Sameer, “tell her to give me something.” Sameer flat out refused and laughed at him. He gave me my paper. It’s as if I would automatically say yes. They might have also assumed that he was some sort of Agent who was also getting a cut. Later, I went to the showroom to book my bike. I found it, we put a sticker on it, and all I needed was two more copies of some official documents. I made sure that in between my capoeira class and sleep to get those copies along with sweets to celebrate my new bike. During celebrations here, it is the person who is celebrating who provides the treats for everyone else. Today I picked up my bike and it’s sitting in the garage of my office. I drove it a bit and it’s easier than it was the last time, which makes me excited. The only sad thing is that it’ll sit there until I get back from Delhi. I’m just so excited to finally say I have a bike!

I’m just so excited to finally say I have a bike! For those who want to look up the details it’s a Hero Honda CD Delux, 100cc. Apparently, after talks with my cousin, who also has a bike, said that they don’t even make bikes that small in the US. I’m already thinking of how I could bring it back with me. ☺

This week has been pretty crazy with assessments. It’s getting towards the end of the year here; we finish at the end of April. Children are much different here. In schools, cheating is a norm and quite blatant; at Akanksha we’re trying to show them why you shouldn’t cheat. So this entire week I’ve been traveling (along with the entire education team) to centers all over the city to conduct language (oral and written) and math assessments. Today we concluded with an assessment party and picking up my bike! I still have some assessments to go through as I pack for Delhi. Maybe I’ll see if I can write some more later tonight, but for now, I leave you with a picture of my bike. For the time being his name is Rampyari, which means one who is loved by lord Ram. However, I will change his name (yes my bike will be a he just like my bicycle in New York – Spenser) when I figure out his personality and ride a bit more. And yes, there is a helmet on the way, and no, I will not ride my bike without a helmet. FYI – I got the bike for a few reasons; 1) I don’t have to go on the back of other people’s bikes without a helmet; 2) It’s better for the environment – Rickshaws pollute soooo much; 3) it’s much easier to commute; 4) I’ve always wanted a bike.

The pic of Pune’s Biker Babe with Rampyari is awesome ! The sweets treat for the new bike, is pending on you though 😀
With you and Rampyari together, I am sure there will be lots of burning rubber on the roads of Pune 😉 Wishing you a nice trip to Delhi !
