Ruckus in PMC, Sena calls Pune bandh today
TNN, Dec 28, 2010, 03.44am IST

PUNE: Corporators from the BJP and Shiv Sena smashed chairs, overturned tables and pulled out microphones during the general body meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday. They were protesting against the shifting of Dadoji Konddeo’s statue from Lal Mahal to Pu La Deshpande garden earlier in the day.

The Shiv Sena has called a 6 am to 5 pm bandh in the city and across Pune district on Tuesday.

The Shivajinagar police have registered a case and booked 25 corporators in connection with the ruckus at the PMC. No arrests have been made so far.

Sena MLC and party spokesperson Neelam Gorhe said that the party’s executive president Uddhav Thackeray had met BJP leader Gopinath Munde and the BJP will support Tuesday’s bandh. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s leader in the PMC Ravindra Dhangekar said his party will also participate in the bandh.

“Essential services like fire brigade, electricity department, water supply and others have been exempted. A review will be taken at 2 pm and we may decide to end the bandh an hour early,” she added.

Police have beefed up security in the city. All officers and around 6,000 policemen from the city police force will be on the roads on Tuesday. “We have four State Reserve Police Force platoons with us and have sought three more platoons and 400 home guards for Tuesday’s bandobast,” said deputy commissioner of police Makrand Ranade (special branch) on Monday.

Konddeo’s statue was part of the sculpture at Lal Mahal depicting a young Shivaji, along with his mother Jijamata, tilling the soil of Pune with a golden plough. Konddeo, according to some historians, guided Shivaji during his childhood. However, others say he was not Shivaji’s teacher.

On Thursday last, the general body of the PMC had approved the shifting of the statue. While the ruling Nationalist Congress Party-Congress combine and the Republican Party of India supported the resolution, corporators from the BJP, Sena and MNS opposed it.

Monday’s ruckus broke in the PMC building just after the general body convened in the Chhatrapati Shivaji hall. The BJP and Shiv Sena corporators shouted slogans and flashed cards before gathering near the dais to protest against the shifting of the statue by the civic body at 2 am on Monday.

Senior BJP corporator Vikas Mathkari climbed on mayor Mohansingh Rajpal’s table and broke its glass top. Shiv Sena leader Sham Deshpande, along with other corporators pushed the mayor, dragged his chair away and threw it down from the third floor. It smashed into pieces. Nobody was hurt.
